Wat Suhat and the Giant Swing – (en de reuze schommel) Bangkok

The Giant Swing was build by King Rama II (1809-1824) to honour and thank the god Shiva for the rice harvest. The festivities around the Giant Swing also requested Shiva a good harvest the next time. During this celebration period Shiva would visit the earth for 10 days. During celebrations men sometimes swung more than 25 meters in the air. Due to many accidents this is now frobidden.

De enorme schommel is gebouwd geweest onder het bewint van Rama II (1809-1824) om de god Shiva te danken voor de rijstoogst. De festiviteiten aan de schommel stemden Shiva gunstig voor de volgende oogst. Tijdens deze periode zou de god Shiva de aarde voor 10 dagen bezoeken. Tijdens de festiviteiten schommelden mannen soms meer als 25 meter hoog in de lucht. Door de vele ongevallen is dit nu verboden.

The Wat Suhat temple houses an 8 meter high bronze Buddha statue which contains the ashes of King Rama VIII. This temple has received the highest temple grading in Thailand.

Around the temple you find many Chinese Pagodas and bronze horses. The legend claims that these were transported from China to Thailand as ballast together with the rice harvest of China at the beginning of the 19th century.

In de Wat Suhat tempel staat een bronzen Boeddha beeld van meer als 8 meter hoog en bevat de asresten van koning Rama VIII. Deze tempel heeft de hoogste tempelgraad in Thailand.

Rond de tempel staan vele Chinese Pagodes en bronzen paarden. De legende vertelt dat deze werden overgebracht uit China als ballast voor de schepen die de rijstoogst naar Thailand brachten in het begin van de 19de eeuw.

Fietsen in Bangkok – Cycling in Bangkok

We selected "ABC Amazing Bangkok Cyclist" for a cycling tour of 18 km. Almost all participants were Dutch, which was not surprising for a country where everyone loves cycling. It was a beautiful day without rain and we saw many place where we would normally not come.

We cycle through norrow alleys, a market, the harbour and the countryside. We cross the river to the countryside with a long tail boat. The tour is a nice experience and interesting to everyone that likes cycling. I would recommend this company to all cycling fans.

Via "ABC Amazing Bangkok Cyclist" kozen we voor een fietstocht van 18 km. Bijna alle deelnemers waren Nederlanders wat niet verwonderlijk is voor een fietsland. Het was een zeer mooie dag zonder regen en we hebben zeer veel plaatsen gezien waar we anders nooit zouden komen.

Op onze tocht fietsen we door nauwe steegjes, een markt, de haven en het platte land. De oversteek naar het platte land gebeurd met een "long tail boat". Het is een leuke ervaring en een aanrader voor iedereen die van fietsen houd. Voor de fietsliefhebber kan ik deze maatschappij aanraden.

Het Koninklijk Paleis – The Grand Palace - Wat Phra Kaeo - Bangkok

Each time we are in Bangkok, we visit “The Grand Palace”. Each time it remains impressive. For us this is the most interesting site of Bangkok to visit. The Palace was build by King Rama I in 1782. It served as royal residence and government offices.

Iedere keer als we in Bangkok zijn, brengen we een bezoek aan het Koninklijk Paleis. Het is nog steeds indrukwekkend. Dit is voor ons de meest interessante bezienswaardigheid in Bangkok. Het paleis werd gebouwd door koning Rama I in 1782. Het diende als residentie en overheidsgebouw. Het volledige complex bestaat uit meer dan 30 gebouwen.







One of the most important temples is the Royal Monastery of the Emerald Buddha.

Een van de belangrijkste tempels is het Koninklijk Klooster van de Smaragden Boeddha.

Bangkok - The Dome - Lebua - Breeze

We had high expectations from the hotel we booked. We stay 3 nights at Lebau State Tower in Bangkok. The hotel has been designed to make you feel on top of the world. They certainly succeeded in that with their open-air restaurants on the 63rd and 52nd floor. Our room is located on the 57th floor. Below you see a picture with the view from the balcony of our room.

We hadden hoge verwachtingen van het door ons geboekte hotel. We verblijven 3 nachten in Lebua State Tower te Bangkok. Het hotel is ontworpen om je het gevoel te geven op de top van de wereld te zijn. Daar zijn ze zeker in geslaagt met open-lucht restaurants op het 63ste en 52ste verdiep. Onze kamer is op het 57ste verdiep. Hieronder een foto met het zicht van op het balkon van onze kamer.

Our favourite restaurant in Bangkok is the Breeze. You enjoy good gourmet dining specialised in seafood. You enter the open-air restaurant via a coloured glass bridge on the 53rd floor. At the end of the bridge you find a glass pyramid. The view of the city during diner is breathtaking. I would recommend this restaurant for its high quality gourmet dining and the enchanting ambience.

Ons favoriete restaurant van Bangkok is het Breeze restaurant. Je kan er genieten van de goede gourmet keuken gespecialiseerd in vis en schaaldieren. Je komt het open-lucht restaurant binnen via een verlichte glazen brug op het 53ste verdiep. Aan het einde van de brug zie je een glazen piramide. Het zicht over de stad gedurende het diner is adembenemend. Een aanrader op culinair vlak alsook voor de betoverende sfeer.

Benelux Kampioenschap - 4de Ballroom wedstrijd

The Benelux Championships are very important to us because we are not allowed to participate in the Dutch or the Belgium Championships. This tournament we end in place 9 out of 21 couples. No reason to complain about the result. However, our dance quality was lower than the previous 2 competitions. Because of many couples in the re-dance round the dancing was very unpleasant. Everyone tries extremely hard to reach the semi finals. We made it to the semi finals but Kristel lost a toe nail during the process.

Voor ons is het Benelux kampioenschap een belangrijke wedstrijd daar we niet kunnen deelnemen aan het Nederlands of het Belgisch kampioenschap. We behalen de 9de plaats op 21 paren wat voor ons het beste resultaat van dit seizoen is. Geen reden om te klagen over het resultaat. De danskwaliteit was minder als de vorige 2 wedstrijden. Door de vele paren op de vloer in de herkansings- ronde was het zeer onaangenaam dansen. Iedereen gaat tot het uiterste voor zijn plaatst in de halve finale. De halve finale hebben we gehaald, Kristel verloor echter haar teennagel gedurende de kwalificatie.

Holland Masters - 3de Ballroom wedstrijd

Like each year we enjoyed the Holland Masters in Papendal. It's always nice to watch an IDSF competition. We are not good enough yet to participate in IDSF competitions. For us, we enter the 3rd competition of the new season in the D-Class. We end up in place 21 of 28 couples. We are satisfied with the quality of our dancing. The last weeks we have been training on new elements of our frame and dynamics in movement. This has an impact on all our dances.

Net zoals ieder jaar beleven we veel plezier aan de Holland Masters te Papendal. Een IDSF competitie is altijd leuk om te zien. We zijn echter nog niet goed genoeg hieraan deel te nemen. Voor ons stond de 3de wedstrijd in de D-Klasse op het programma. In deze wedstrijd eindigen we op plaatst 21 van 28 paren. We waren tevreden over onze danskwaliteit. Momenteel werken we aan vernieuwing in onze houding en dynamiek van bewegen. Dat heeft een impact op al onze dansen.
