Basilique Notre-Dame in Montréal

This is our last backlog article of our Canada trip of July. This superb church in Montréal is so special because of its bleu and gold interior. They call this also Basilica the Twin Tower church. You have to pay an entrance fee but it is more than worth a visit.

Dit is ons laatste artikel van onze Canada reis van juli. Deze super kerk uit Montréal is zo speciaal omwille van zijn blauw gouden interieur. Ze noemen deze Basiliek ook de tweeling toren kerk. Je moet inkom betalen maar het is zeker een bezoekje waard.

Parc de la Chute Montmorency, Québec

A visit to the historic city centre of Québec can easily be combined with a nature walk in Parc de la Chute Montmorency. You have the possibility to view the waterfall close by at the river. The spray of this 83 meter high waterfall is refreshing on hot summer days. We start the climb of the hill via the wooden stair constructions. On the top of the hills you have spectacular views of Québec and the river. You can even walk above the waterfall on a narrow bridge. The roundtrip walk takes approximately 1,5 hours. If this is too physical for you, there is always the cable car.

Een bezoek aan het historisch centrum van Québec kan makkelijk worden gecombineerd met een wandeling in het Parc de la Chute Montmorency. Men kan de waterval van zeer dichtbij benaderen. De spray van de 83 meter hoge waterval is verfrissend gedurende hete zomerdagen. We starten de beklimming van de heuvel via een houten trap constructie. Boven op de heuvel heb je spectaculaire vergezichten op Québec en de rivier. Je kan tevens over een smalle brug boven de watervallen wandelen. De heen- en terugweg neemt ongeveer 1,5 uur in beslag. Als dit te zwaar is voor u, is er een kabelbaan ter beschikking.

Cathédrale Marie-Reine-Du-Monde, Montréal

This Cathedral, Mary Queen of the World, is a very impressive and large church. It not a coincidence that this street is named Cathedral street. The church was build in a Neo-Gothic style and dates from 1852. It's a pity that this church is in the same city as the Basilique de Notre-Dame, nothing can compete against this architectural treasure. The altar and the interior of the church are real eye catchers.

Deze kathedraal "Marie-Reine-Du-Monde", is een grote indrukwekkende kerk. Het is geen toeval dat de straat waar ze gevestigd is, "Cathedral Street" is genaamd. De kerk is gebouwd in een neo-gotische stijl en dateert van 1852. Het is spijtig dat ze in dezelfde stad staat als de Basiliek van de Notre-Dame, een kerk buiten competitie, een architecturale schat. Het altaar en interieur van de kerk zijn opmerkelijk.

Lively Chinatown, Montréal

It becomes a fact of live, each major city in the world has his own Chinatown. In Montréal, Chinatown is located around St. Laurent Street. Originally this part of the city was Jewish and people from Hong Kong moved in. Now the community is mainly Chinese and Vietnamese. The total population of Chinatown is estimated around 80.000. It is a colourful and lively area with many restaurants and shops. The entrance of Chinatown is marked with a gate and even the American hotel chain Holiday Inn has mounted pagodas on its rooftop. Applied marketing of the highest level.

Het wordt een vaste waarde, iedere grootstad krijgt zijn eigen Chinatown. In Montréal is Chinatown gelegen rond St. Laurent Street. Oorspronkelijk was dit stadsdeel Joods en immigranten uit Hong Kong hebben zich hier ook gevestigd. Nu is de gemeenschap van ongeveer 80.000 inwoners hoofdzakelijk Chinees en Vietnamees. Het is een zeer kleurrijke wijk met veel winkeltjes en restaurants. De ingang tot Chinatown wordt gekenmerkt door een Chinese poort. Zelf Amerikaanse hotelketens zoals Holiday Inn hebben hier pagodes op hun daken gebouwd. Dit is toegepaste Marketing op het hoogste niveau.

General Impressions, Québec

When we prepared for our trip to Québec, we imagined a small city full of historical buildings. This was not the case, the city has more than half a million inhabitants and looks industrial. The old city part is exactly as you find in the books. Historical houses and monuments give the city a warm feeling, street musicians try to entertain you, and you find flowers and green areas everywhere. Around the old city you still see big parts of the defence wall with canons.

Toen we onze reis naar Québec hebben voorbereid, dachten we dat dit een kleine stad was met vele historische gebouwen. Dit is echter niet het geval, het is een grote industriële stad met meer dan een half miljoen inwoners. Het oude stadsgedeelte daarentegen is exact zoals beschreven in de reisgidsen. De oude huizen en monumenten, geven de stad een warme uitstraling. Andere troeven zoals groene oases met vele bloemperken en straatmuzikanten versterken dit gevoel. Het oude stadsdeel is nog steeds omringd door een verdedigingsmuur met kanonnen.

General Impressions, Montréal

For us, Montréal is a city with real contrasts between the historic and modern era. Old historic houses and monuments stand side by side with modern buildings. The same counts for transportation, a Lamborghini next to a horse and carriage. It doesn't stop with this clash of time, Chinatown gives you an insight in the Asian culture. The city is full of live and you find many street artists around the harbour.

Voor ons is Montréal de stad met grote contrasten tussen de geschiedenis en het moderne tijdperk. Oude historische huizen en monumenten zij aan zij met moderne gebouwen. Het zelfde geldt voor het transport, een Lamborghini naast een paard met koets. Het stopt niet bij de clash der tijden, Chinatown biedt u ook een inzicht in de Aziatische cultuur. Het is een bruisende stad vol leven, aan de haven vind je veel straatartiesten.

Clifton Hill, The street of fun at the Falls

Clifon Hill, the street of fun at the Falls, is indeed a street full of crazy bars, extreme shops, and amusement. It's a bit like Las Vegas entertainment but in a smaller version. You can find a carnival fair, have a drink in a strange bar like the "Rainforest Cafe", go bowling.... It's a very busy street, many people go here to have fun but also to wander around in this crazy street full of music, sounds and colours. At night the lights come to live.

Clifton Hill, een straat vol vermaak aan de Niagara watervallen. Het is inderdaad een straat vol plezier, met gekke bars, extreme winkels, en veel amusement. Het is een klein beetje zoals Las Vegas. Je vindt er een kermis, je kan er iets drinken in een rare bar zoals "The Rainforest", of gaan bowlen... Het is er zeer druk, heel veel mensen komen hier plezier maken of wandelen wat rond om te genieten van de muziek, geluiden, en de vele kleurrijke zaken. 's Nachts komen alle lichtjes tot leven.

Supreme Court of Justice, Ottawa

The Supreme Court of Justice in Ottawa was one of the buildings we had on our visit list. We didn't expect to be invited for a guided tour, which was free of charge again. It looks like the Canadian government is trying to open its institutes as much as possible for the public. It was an interesting tour, they explained how the Court works and gave some historical background information of this Court building and the previous ones.

Het Hof van Cassatie was een gebouw dat op onze lijst van geplande bezoeken stond in Ottawa. We hadden niet verwacht uitgenodigd te worden voor terug een gratis rondleiding. Het lijkt er op dat de Canadese overheid er alles aan doet om zijn instellingen bij het publiek bekend te maken. Het was een interessante rondleiding waarin men uitleg gaf over de werking van het Hof alsook de historiek van het gebouw en vorige gebouwen waar het Hof in gevestigd was.

Parliament, House of Commons, Senate and Memorial Chamber, Ottawa

The Parliament of Canada in Ottawa is one of the most interesting places of the country to visit. Plan at least 3 hours for the exterior and the guided tour. The tour is free of charge and it is a top attraction. Try to beat that. We were lucky that the House of Commons and the Senate were on summer leave and we could visit both places. After the tour you could visit the peace tower with spectacular views of Ottawa. On your return to the exit you pass by the memorial chamber. This visit has to be on your list when you are in Ottawa.

Het parlementsgebouw in Ottawa is één van de meest interessante plaatsen van het land om te bezoeken. Hou er rekening mee dat je 3 uur dient te plannen voor de buitenkant en de rondleiding. De rondleiding is zeer goed en gratis. Welke toeristische attractie kan daar tegenop. We hebben geluk gehad dat zowel de Kamer van Volksvertegenwoordigers als de Senaat op zomer vakantie waren. Zodoende hebben we beide plaatsen kunnen bezoeken. Na de rondleiding mag je op eigen initiatief de Peace Tower bezoeken waar je een ongelooflijk mooi zicht over Ottawa hebt. Op de weg terug naar buiten ga je nog langs de "Memorial Chamber". Dit mag je niet missen wanneer je in Ottawa bent.
