Supreme Court of Justice, Ottawa

The Supreme Court of Justice in Ottawa was one of the buildings we had on our visit list. We didn't expect to be invited for a guided tour, which was free of charge again. It looks like the Canadian government is trying to open its institutes as much as possible for the public. It was an interesting tour, they explained how the Court works and gave some historical background information of this Court building and the previous ones.

Het Hof van Cassatie was een gebouw dat op onze lijst van geplande bezoeken stond in Ottawa. We hadden niet verwacht uitgenodigd te worden voor terug een gratis rondleiding. Het lijkt er op dat de Canadese overheid er alles aan doet om zijn instellingen bij het publiek bekend te maken. Het was een interessante rondleiding waarin men uitleg gaf over de werking van het Hof alsook de historiek van het gebouw en vorige gebouwen waar het Hof in gevestigd was.

Parliament, House of Commons, Senate and Memorial Chamber, Ottawa

The Parliament of Canada in Ottawa is one of the most interesting places of the country to visit. Plan at least 3 hours for the exterior and the guided tour. The tour is free of charge and it is a top attraction. Try to beat that. We were lucky that the House of Commons and the Senate were on summer leave and we could visit both places. After the tour you could visit the peace tower with spectacular views of Ottawa. On your return to the exit you pass by the memorial chamber. This visit has to be on your list when you are in Ottawa.

Het parlementsgebouw in Ottawa is één van de meest interessante plaatsen van het land om te bezoeken. Hou er rekening mee dat je 3 uur dient te plannen voor de buitenkant en de rondleiding. De rondleiding is zeer goed en gratis. Welke toeristische attractie kan daar tegenop. We hebben geluk gehad dat zowel de Kamer van Volksvertegenwoordigers als de Senaat op zomer vakantie waren. Zodoende hebben we beide plaatsen kunnen bezoeken. Na de rondleiding mag je op eigen initiatief de Peace Tower bezoeken waar je een ongelooflijk mooi zicht over Ottawa hebt. Op de weg terug naar buiten ga je nog langs de "Memorial Chamber". Dit mag je niet missen wanneer je in Ottawa bent.

The Blue Notre-Dame Cathedral in Ottawa

This was the first Cathedral or church we visited on our trip in Canada. We were surprised, because we had never seen the inside of a church before with a blue ceiling. We really liked it. This is also the oldest church of Ottawa. The Cathedral has gothic elements and the decorations are present in all areas of the church. The wooden elements in combination with the blue ceiling create a warm atmosphere. The silver coloured towers are an eye catcher. A very special Cathedral.

Dit was de eerste kerk die we hebben bezocht op onze reis in Canada. We waren verrast, want we hadden nog nooit de binnenkant van een kerk gezien met een blauw plafond. Het was echt prachtig. Dit is tevens de oudste kerk van Ottawa. De Kathedraal heeft Gotische elementen en de versieringen zijn alom aanwezig. De houten elementen in combinatie met het blauwe plafond geven een gevoel van warmte. De zilverkleurige torens trekken onmiddellijk de aandacht. Een zeer speciale Kathedraal.

Change of the Guards in Ottawa

At Parliament Hill in Ottawa during the summer season, you can witness the Change of the Guards ceremony each day at 10:00 am. Make sure you are on time, many people are interested as you can see on the video. The ceremony has a duration of 30 minutes. The English influence is still present.

Op Parliament Hill in Ottawa kan je gaan kijken naar de wisseling van de wacht. Deze ceremonie wordt dagelijks opgevoerd gedurende de zomer en start om 10:00 uur 's morgens. Zorg er voor dat je vroeg aanwezig bent, er zijn veel toeschouwers. De ceremonie duurt ongeveer 30 minuten. De Engelse invloed is nog steeds aanwezig.

National War Memorial, Ottawa

Next to the Rideau Canal on Wellington Street you find the National War Memorial of Canada for all soldiers who lost their lives during the First and Second World War. Two military guards stand watch by the tomb of the Unknown Soldier and are replaced each hour with a ceremony. Also all fallen Canadian soldiers on the battlefields of Passchendale in Belgium, are remembered and respected for their offers by this memorial.

Naast het Rideau kanaal aan Wellington Street vind je de "National War Memorial" van Canada voor alle soldaten die gesneuveld zijn in Wereldoorlog I en II. Twee militairen houden de wacht bij het graf van de Onbekende Soldaat en worden ieder uur ceremonieel vervangen. Ook alle gesneuvelde Canadese soldaten van de Passchendaalse slagvelden in Belgie, worden hier gerespecteerd en herdacht voor hun offers.

Fairmont Chateau Laurier, Ottawa

The Fairmont hotels have always attracted us. Now that we were in Ottawa we certainly wanted to visit this hotel. We didn't stay here but had to have a look inside. I am sure we will try one of the Fairmont Hotels in the future. The quality is excellent and this hotel is located ideally. The first picture is taken from the Peace Tower of Parliament Hill.

Fairmont Hotels hebben ons altijd wel aangesproken. Nu dat we in Ottawa waren wilden we zeker dit hotel eens bezoeken. We hebben hier niet gelogeerd maar toch eens binnen gekeken. We zijn er zeker van in de toekomst in een van de Fairmont hotels te verblijven. De kwaliteit is uitstekent en dit hotel is ideaal gelegen. De eerste foto werd getrokken van uit de Peace Tower van Parliament Hill.

Parliament Hill, Ottawa

Parliament Hill is the government centre of Canada. This enormous area has two lawns for ceremonies with at three sides unbelievable Gothic buidlings. The centre block is the most important building with the library of the parliament, the peace tower, the Senate and the House of Commons. On the East and West side you also find very nice buildings belonging to the administration. The buildings are from 1859 and the Library is the only original part that was not destroyed by fire or war. The parliament buildings can be visited and we spent more three hours here. It is certainly worth it.

Parliament Hill is het hart van de overheid in Canada. Naast deze twee enorm grote grasvelden vind je drie ongelooflijk mooie Gotische gebouwen. Het middelste gebouw is het meest belangrijke met de bibliotheek, de vredestoren, de Senaat en de Kamer van Volksvertegenwoordigers. Op de west en oost zijde vind je ook zeer mooie gebouwen die behoren tot de administratie van het Parlement. De gebouwen dateren van 1859 en de bibliotheek is het enige originele deel dat niet werd vernietigd door brand of oorlog. De parlementsgebouwen kunnen worden bezocht en we hebben hier meer als drie uren doorgebracht. Het is zeker de moeite waard.

General Impressions of Ottawa

Ottawa, the capital of Canada is a treasury room full of architectural jewels. The city offers a mix of buildings styles, in combination with many green areas. Major attractions like Parliament Hill, the Peace Tower, changing of the guards, the war memorial, the supreme court of justice, the Fairmont Chateau Laurier and the Basilique of the Notre-Dame are not covered in this article. They will follow later. These pictures give you a first glance of Ottawa.

Ottawa, de hoofdstad van Canada is een schatkamer vol juwelen. De stad biedt u een waaier van gebouwen in verschillende stijlen gecombineerd met vele groene oases. De allerbelangrijkste hoogtepunten van de stad zoals, Parliament Hill, de vredestoren, de wisseling van de wacht, het hof van cassatie, het Fairmont kasteel Laurier en de basiliek van de Notre-Dame komen niet aan bod in dit artikel. Zij worden later beschreven op deze blog. Deze foto's geven u een eerste indruk van Ottawa.
