Central Station, Antwerp - Centraal Station, Antwerpen

Located on "Astridplein" in Antwerp you find the historical entrance of Antwerp's central station. This station is very special because of the eclectic building style. This style is a combination of historical treasures and modern elements. The trains enter and leave the station on three floors. The present meets the past via a steel roofing that covers the platforms. The roofing is 186m long and 43m high. This is the most interesting train station I have ever seen.

The Cathedral of our Lady, Antwerp - OLV Kathedraal, Antwerpen

You have a nice view on the cathedral from the "Groenplaats" and the "Main Square". The constructions started during the 16th century and the city continued working on it. Inside you find a choir from the year 1415 and several paintings from Peter Paul Rubens. Among these are the two famous triptych paintings: "The Raising of the Cross" and "The Descent of the Cross". It is a pity you have to pay 5 euro entrance, but it is worth it. The cathedral is very beautiful and the paintings are priceless.

Antwerp is the place to be for shopping. The Meir is the main shopping street where most popular brands are available. Besides shopping you can also enjoy the nice architecture of the buildings. The most interesting buildings are the Palace and the "Stadsfeestzaal" that holds an indoor shopping centre with an exclusive Champagne bar. The Meir is a super place for Shopping and historical buildings.

The quays and Castle Steen, Antwerp - De kaaien en het Steen, Antwerpen

A pity it was a rainy day in Antwerp, but I still enjoyed my walk on the quays. The castle "Het Steen" (translation - The Stone) was build in the year 1200 and is now the oldest building in Antwerp. Between the 14th and the 18th century it was a prison where all kinds of horrible executions took place. It's strange to know you walk through a building were people were cut into pieces. It's better to focus on the architecture and the views of the Schelde. Certainly worth visiting.

Main square Antwerp, Grote markt Antwerpen

The main square of Antwerp is rather small but has many guild houses from the 16th century, most of them having a restaurant on the ground floor. In the first picture you can see the Cathedral of our lady in the background. The city hall is very special and was build between 1561 and 1565 in a Renaissance style with Italian and Flemish influence.

In front of the City Hall you see the statue of Brabo throwing away the hand of the giant Antigoon who forced everyone who wanted to cross the Schelde to pay a toll fee. Brabo stopped the giant by cutting of his hand. The city was named according to this legend, Antwerpen (Ant = hand, werpen = throwing).

On the cold evening of January 1, 19:30 we decided to go for a walk in Ypres. We had to hurry to be on time for "The Last Post" ceremony at the Menin Gate Memorial. Even on this special day and the cold, there were many people present showing their respect to all soldiers of the British Commonwealth who fell on the battlefield east of this town during World War I and that have no known grave. In total the names of 54,896 soldiers are written on the walls of the memorial. Everyday since 1928, "The Last Post" has been played with the aim is to maintain this in perpetuity.

There are many beautiful houses on the market of Ypres that is dominated by the large building of the Cloth Hall. The Cloth Hall is an amazing building from the 13th century and has a Belfry of 70 meter high which was used as a commercial Hall (market) during the Middle Ages. This building is now host to the "Flanders Fields Museum".
